Welcome · Bienvenue · Bienvini

A safe harbour for the people who work the sea.

Since 1857 the Mauritius Sailors' Home Society has looked after seafarers passing through Port Louis — rest, recreation and a hand ashore, whoever you sail for.

What we do

A welfare centre, open to every crew that docks here.

Trevessa House is run by the Mauritius Sailors' Home Society alongside the Seafarers' Welfare Fund. Seafarers come ashore tired, far from home and often on a few hours' leave. The centre exists so that time ashore is worth something.

01 · Rest

Accommodation

Rooms for seafarers in transit, and a quiet place to sit down away from the ship.

02 · Recreation

Pool, games & library

Swimming pool, indoor and outdoor games, books and magazines, internet and computers.

03 · Faith

Chapel & prayer room

A quiet space set aside for crews of every faith and none.

04 · Practical

Help ashore

Currency exchange, legal advice and local guidance for crews and their agents.

Working with

The Seafarers' Welfare Fund

The Society works with the Seafarers' Welfare Fund to keep the centre running and to meet Mauritius's commitments under the Maritime Labour Convention. Between us, a ship's crew arriving at Port Louis has somewhere to go.

Ship agents, shipping lines and welfare organisations are welcome to get in touch about crew visits, transport and group arrangements.

Heritage

One hundred and sixty-eight years on the same errand.

The Society was founded in 1857 to promote the welfare of sailors, in particular those engaged in trade between Mauritius and other ports. The wording has aged. The job has not.

The Mauritius Sailors' Home Society is founded in Port Louis by a group drawn from shipping and the maritime trades.

  • 1858

The Society acquires its first premises in Port Louis. In its first year, several hundred seamen are boarded at the Home.

  • 1923

The SS Trevessa founders in the Indian Ocean. Her lifeboats sail more than a thousand miles to Rodrigues and Mauritius — one of the great open-boat voyages. The Society's house carries her name.

  • 1957

The Society marks its centenary year.

  • Today

Trevessa House at Mer Rouge operates as the Seafarers' Welfare Centre, run by the Society with the Seafarers' Welfare Fund.
